Teaching Fractions: Pumpkin/Pizza Pie

I thought that this is an interesting activity that can be used to teach the subtraction of related fractions.  This activity engages students and activates their schema.

Materials Required:

  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Colouring materials

\
As the students are colouring and designing their favourite pizza or pumpkin pie, they will be exposed to the concept of fraction when they are tasked to split their food into equal parts. It also allows them to communicate their understanding when they write the maths problem.

As it is visually appealing, it can be placed on the board. This will allow students to be exposed to the concept of the subtraction of like fractions when they enter the class.
